How Does the Paroli 3 Win Ladder Work?
Stake one unit at 49.5% win chance for 2x payout. On a win, let the full return ride: 1 becomes 2, then 4, then 8. After the third straight win, bank the 8 and restart. Any loss at any rung resets to one unit.
Paroli inverts martingale. Instead of doubling into losses with your own money, you double into wins with the game's money. A full round has four possible endings:

Note the clean symmetry: 87.87% of rounds cost exactly one unit, and 12.13% pay seven. Only your first unit is ever your own money at risk in an accounting sense; rungs two and three wager the round's winnings. That is why a paroli session on dice can run for hours on a bankroll that martingale would torch in minutes.
On auto-bet, configure: on win increase by 100%, on loss reset to base. The three win cap usually needs either manual banking or a strategy editor rule, since basic auto-bet does not count consecutive wins. Three rungs is the convention because it balances completion frequency (about 1 ladder in 8 rounds) against payoff size; taller ladders complete far less often.
Why Does Paroli Cap Your Downside Per Round?
Because you never increase a stake after a loss. Every round begins and ends with one base unit of your bankroll at risk; escalation only happens while the round is in profit. Losing streaks cost one unit per round, never a doubling sequence.

What paroli gives up in exchange is the martingale illusion of frequent wins. You will lose 87.9% of rounds. Losing runs of failed ladders are long and normal: the chance of 10 failed ladders in a row is 0.879^10 = 27.5%, and 20 in a row happens 7.6% of the time. The session experience is a slow bleed punctuated by +7 spikes, so discipline is about tolerating drawdown rather than fearing a bust. What Is the Expected Value of a Paroli Round?
Per round: 0.1213 times +7 minus 0.8787 times 1 = minus 0.0297 units. Average amount wagered per round is 2.97 units, so the expectation is exactly minus 1% of wagered. Paroli does not change the house edge.
Run the numbers and paroli lands precisely where every dice system lands. The probability of completing the ladder is 0.495^3 = 0.1213. A completed ladder nets +7; everything else nets -1:
EV per round = (0.1213 x 7) - (0.8787 x 1) = -0.0297 units
The average wagered per round is 1 + (0.495 x 2) + (0.495^2 x 4) = 2.97 units, because rungs two and three only happen when the previous rung won. Divide: -0.0297 / 2.97 = exactly minus 1%, the house edge. No rearrangement of when you bet big and when you bet small can move this number, and any guide telling you otherwise is selling variance as edge.
What honestly differs from martingale is the shape of the variance and the total exposure. Paroli wagers about 2.97 units per round versus martingale's escalating sequences, and its worst cases are shallow. Across 50,000 simulated 100 round sessions: mean minus 3.0 units, median minus 4, and 44.2% of sessions profitable. The middle 90% of sessions landed between minus 44 and plus 44 units. Best session: +124. Worst: minus 92.

Three things stand out. First, the mean of minus 3.0 units matches theory: 100 rounds times minus 0.0297 per round. Second, the distribution is close to symmetric, unlike martingale's cliff shaped histogram; paroli's +7 spikes and -1 bleeds blend into something that looks almost like flat betting with extra spread. Third, nearly half of sessions end in profit despite the negative expectation, because a couple of ladders landing early can carry a session.
Expect around 12 completed ladders per 100 rounds (the simulation averaged 12.1). Sessions with 15 or more ladders finished solidly positive; sessions with 8 or fewer finished clearly negative. That single number, ladders completed, explains almost all of the variance between sessions.
Paroli or Martingale: Which Fits Your Bankroll?
